Gold Zakat in Selangor: What Differs by State, and Where to Get the Official Figure

The zakat framework is the same in every state, but the nisab value and the treatment of worn jewellery differ. Understand what's specific to Selangor and where to get the official LZS figure.

By Nurul Izzati

If you searched for "gold zakat Selangor" rather than just "gold zakat", your instinct was right.

Zakat in Malaysia isn't administered by a single federal body. It's administered by state religious authorities, and in Selangor that body is Lembaga Zakat Selangor. So part of the answer genuinely does depend on your state.

But not all of it. This article separates what's the same everywhere from what actually differs — so you know which part you can take from any source, and which part has to come from LZS itself.

What's the same in every state

These three are the underlying framework and they don't change by state:

  • The nisab equals 85 grams of gold. This is the minimum threshold. Below it, no zakat is due on that gold.
  • A haul of one year. The gold must be held above the nisab threshold for a full year.
  • A rate of 2.5%. Applied to the value of the qualifying gold, not to any gain.

We cover the five-step mechanics fully in the guide to calculating gold zakat, and what nisab means in more detail in the nisab article.

What genuinely differs by state

1. The ringgit value of the nisab.

The nisab is defined by weight — 85 grams — not in ringgit. Its RM value is 85 grams multiplied by the gold price, so it moves every time the gold price moves.

That's why each authority publishes its own current nisab value, and why any article quoting a fixed RM figure will be wrong within weeks. You can check the current gold price here to understand which way it's moving, but the official nisab figure has to come from LZS.

2. The treatment of worn jewellery.

This is the difference that confuses people most. Gold stored as savings and gold worn as jewellery are not necessarily treated the same.

Some states set an 'uruf threshold — an amount of jewellery considered ordinary personal use and not zakatable — and that threshold can differ between states. Because it can be updated, we won't quote a specific figure here. Confirm Selangor's current position directly with LZS.

The costliest confusion

Most people think of "my gold" as one number.

For zakat purposes it's usually two separate categories: stored gold (bars, dinar, a gold accumulation account) and worn jewellery. The first almost always counts. The second depends on your state's position.

Merging them causes two kinds of error — paying more than you owe, or wrongly assuming you're below the nisab when your stored gold alone already passes it. Both are avoided by separating the list before you calculate.

Where to get the official figure

Lembaga Zakat Selangor publishes the current nisab value and provides its own official calculator, with the reference price and method it uses. That's the authoritative source for Selangor — not this article, and not any gold dealer's website.

For more detailed jurisprudential questions — unusual circumstances, jointly-owned gold, gold pledged as hantaran — refer to someone qualified in this field. We sell gold; we are not an authority on zakat rulings, and we won't pretend otherwise.

As a starting point before you go to LZS, our free zakat calculator can help you make an initial estimate based on the weight you hold.

In short

The framework is universal: 85 grams, one year, 2.5%. What's state-specific is the nisab value published on the day you calculate, and the treatment of worn jewellery.

Use a guide to understand the method. Use LZS for the number.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for gold zakat in Selangor?
The nisab is equal to 85 grams of gold. Its ringgit value moves with the gold price, so the exact RM figure should be taken from Lembaga Zakat Selangor at the time you calculate, not from an article that may already be out of date.
Is gold jewellery I actually wear subject to zakat in Selangor?
The treatment of worn jewellery differs between states, and some states set an 'uruf threshold below which jewellery is not zakatable. Because that threshold can change and varies by state, confirm Selangor's current position directly with Lembaga Zakat Selangor.
Does the calculation differ between Selangor and the Federal Territories?
The underlying framework is the same — nisab, haul, and the 2.5% rate. What can differ is the nisab value published at a given time and the treatment of worn jewellery, because each state is administered by its own religious authority.
Where do I pay gold zakat in Selangor?
Through Lembaga Zakat Selangor, which provides its own official payment channels and calculator. Paying through your own state body ensures the zakat is distributed through the channels valid for that state.
